The Coalition of Communities of Color (CCC) seeks a new member of its team to lead Redefine, our Environmental & Climate Justice Program. The program supports policies that advance environmental, climate, and energy justice and provide economic and social benefit to communities of color. Specific near-term program objectives include building capacity in communities of color to advance climate solutions; reforming policy practices; shifting discourses that centralize the voices of those most impacted by environmental injustice and climate change; and strengthening relationships between environmental organizations, organizations of color and others such as (governments, community based organizations (CBOs), etc.) The successful candidate will be able to support the CCC’s vision of built power in communities of color to act and lead on environmental issues, and the presence of a strong social movement in Oregon for environmental and climate justice.
The mission of the CCC is to address the socioeconomic disparities, institutional racism, and inequity of services experienced by our families, children and communities; and to organize our communities for collective action resulting in social change to obtain self-determination, wellness, justice and prosperity. Formed in 2001, the CCC is an alliance of culturally-specific community based organizations with representation from six communities of color: African, African American, Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American, Pacific Islander, and Slavic. Description of Duties
Convenes and supports a cross-cultural collaborative of organizations and leaders of color to advance a shared vision and agenda around the environment and climate action
Works to build capacity in CCC member organizations to participate and lead in environmental and climate justice.
Helps build partnerships between organizations of color and the environmental community
Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with CCC members, partners, key interest
groups and individuals, including policy makers
Develops policy proposals for ensuring fair and equitable impacts and benefits for communities of color
Analyzes state and local legislation and programs for their impact on environmental justice
Supports and monitors implementation of state and local initiatives
Produces fact sheets, reports and other communication tools to support policy proposals and project objectives
Investigates and analyzes issues germane to the program, reviews relevant professional materials and communications on a continuing basis
Designs public education materials; writes articles, alerts and opinion pieces
Prepares and presents public comments and testimony;educates policy makers.
Actively seeks earned media and serves as a spokesperson, as directed
Represents CCC at public and community events
Educates and engages CCC members through website communications, articles in e- newsletter, personal interactions and other communications
Writes program-related grant proposals; meets with foundation officers and other potential funders; writes progress reports
Actively seeks new sources of financial support
Three to five years of professional experience performing similar job duties to those listed in this announcement
Strong expertise in racial justice
Demonstrated ability to apply an environmental justice lens to public policy
Understanding of, and experience working with, diverse populations, specifically communities of color with representation in the CCC: African, African American, Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American, Pacific Islander and Slavic communities
Proven ability to bring stakeholders together around shared visions and work strategically to secure policy changes and other program objectives
Strong writing and speaking skills
Ability to work closely with other CCC staff in programs including advocacy, research, and leadership development
Starting salary is at least $50,000. Paid time off is based on tenure with the organization and includes accruals of sick and vacation hours. We recognize 10 paid holidays per calendar year. We also provide medical, dental and vision insurance, a Flexible Spending Account, and life insurance. Employees may enroll in a 401k retirement plan after one year of employment. We provide an $80/ month transportation stipend.
