Message from the Executive Director

Dear Members, Partners, and Community,

Fall has arrived, and with it, plenty of opportunities to help build a more just future for all of our communities.

Election Day (November 8th) is less than a month away, with ballot measures both local and statewide that are incredibly important to the cause of racial justice. Don’t forget to register to vote or update your voter registration by October 18th at OregonVotes.gov. Next week we will send our full slate of ballot measure endorsements, which you can preview here.

We are also spreading the word about an exciting community grant opportunity due October 24th, a chance to get involved with our statewide water justice network, and a survey on Multnomah County environmental justice indicators. Read on for more.

Respectfully,

Marcus C. Mundy, Executive Director
Coalition of Communities of Color

Help change Portland’s city charter: YES on Measure 26-228

Get involved and help pass Measure 26-228

The Coalition of Communities of Color has endorsed Measure 26-228, the Portland United for Change campaign to amend the city charter. This measure is the result of 18 months of widespread community engagement and research conducted by the Portland Charter Review Commission. Measure 26-228 is an opportunity for all Portlanders to have an effective, accountable city government with meaningful representation on City Council for all communities.

The campaign needs volunteers to knock doors and make calls to voters to let them know about the policy and its 100+ endorsers, including culturally-specific organizations and racial justice leaders.

Due October 24: Community Emotional Wellbeing Grant Opportunity

Environmental Justice Opportunities

Join the Oregon Water Justice Network

The Oregon Water Justice Network has community stipends to grow our network’s capacity and joint leadership! Depending on the number of organizations that apply, stipends will be between $1,000-$1,500 per organization. As part of the stipend program, we ask each participating organization to attend 8 of the 12 monthly meetings and to present during at least one meeting during the next 12 months. This is a great opportunity to share about work your organization is engaged in and learn about water justice work happening across the state.

What is the Oregon Water Justice Network?

Monthly gatherings and online community that include tribal partners, community leaders, community-based organizations, and a few close allies from the non-profit environmental space. The goals of the Oregon Water Justice Network are to:

  1. Learn about water justice work happening across the state

  2. Build relationships with one another to strengthen a statewide water justice movement and community

  3. Share stories, experiences, and resources

Multnomah County Environmental Justice Indicators Survey

CCC is working on a project around EJ indicators (such as heat, tree canopy, proximity to green spaces, and transportation) and we created a survey for Black, Indigenous, and people of color community members residing in Multnomah County. The end result will be an interactive dashboard that will layer quantitative data with the stories/lived experiences shared by community members pulled from the survey and a focus group we are putting together this Fall.

Please share this survey link with community members, colleagues, family, and friends you know that may have time to complete this 15-20 minute survey: https://coalitionofcolor.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9oXTalDinQx1kj4
